Surf Photography & Filmmaking at Scotland’s Lost Shore Surf Resort
Filming and photographing surfers is always an incredible experience — but doing it inside a man-made wave in the heart of Scotland? That’s a first.
Recently, I had the chance to shoot at the Lost Shore Surf Resort, Scotland’s brand-new inland surf destination. As a surf photographer and filmmaker based in the UK, this was a unique opportunity to capture world-class surfing in a completely controlled environment — and it didn't disappoint.
A Surf Shoot Unlike Any Other: Welcome to the Wave Pool
Unlike traditional ocean surf photography, working in a wave pool like Lost Shore offers a consistent and repeatable setting, which completely changes the dynamic of a shoot. With mechanically generated waves, we could plan our angles, lighting, and lens choices down to the second — something that's almost impossible in open water conditions.
But don't be fooled — even with controlled surf, timing and positioning were just as critical. From water-based shots to land angles and elevated views, I worked across multiple locations to capture both the power of the wave and the unique vibe of this inland surf scene.
Behind the Lens: What Made This Shoot Special
As someone who’s spent years filming on the rugged coasts of Cornwall and in heavy conditions at places like Nazaré, there was something surreal about shooting surfers in full flow — just outside of Edinburgh.
Highlights included:
Crystal-clear water imagery with tight, punchy barrels
Golden-hour sessions where the pool lighting mimicked the mood of a beach break
The chance to work with talented local and international surfers pushing limits in a new setting
Having reliable waves meant I could really focus on creative framing and motion, capturing sequences I’d usually only dream of pulling off in the wild.
The Cherry on Top: Featured in SURFER Magazine
One of the standout results from the project? My images from the Lost Shore shoot were featured in SURFER Magazine — a publication I grew up reading, and one that’s helped shape the culture of surfing for decades. Seeing my photography showcased alongside global talent in such an iconic outlet was an absolute career highlight.
Surf Videography in the UK: Evolving with the Waves
This shoot was a clear reminder that surf filmmaking in the UK is evolving — fast. As more inland surf parks emerge and access to waves becomes more democratized, so does the opportunity for creative surf storytelling in new environments.
Whether it’s capturing a stormy session on the Cornish coast or producing commercial surf content in an artificial wave pool, I bring the same passion, precision, and storytelling focus to every project.
